Why This Matters
AB 1540 directs California’s Health and Human Services Agency and Office of Emergency Services to build a dedicated routing option (reported at roughly $5 million in state resources) within the federal 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline so that callers who identify as LGBTQ+ — including minors — are steered to specialized, identity-affirming crisis organizations rather than the general 988 system.
Parents, not government agencies, bear the God-given responsibility to walk their children through a crisis. AB 1540 quietly writes parents out of the picture, building a taxpayer-funded pipeline that routes children in a mental health emergency toward organizations committed in advance to one ideological viewpoint on identity, with no requirement that moms and dads ever be told. A crisis line should exist to save a child’s life, full stop — not to sort that child by identity and hand them off to an advocacy network behind their parents’ backs. Every family in California should be alarmed that their tax dollars may fund exactly that.
