Why This Matters
AB 1876 amends California’s Health and Safety Code and Insurance Code to bar health plans and insurers from excluding or limiting coverage based on “sex characteristics,” “sex assigned at birth,” or “gender identity.” In practice, the bill requires health plans to cover so-called “gender-affirming” interventions — including puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical procedures — as a matter of nondiscrimination law, with violations treated as regulatory and potentially criminal offenses.
AB 1876 forces every Californian with health insurance — including churches, Christian schools, pregnancy centers, and families who hold sincere religious convictions about the body and human sexuality — to help underwrite irreversible procedures many believe are morally and medically wrong, with no conscience protection whatsoever. This is not nondiscrimination; it is compelled participation. No person of faith, no religious employer, and no medical professional should be forced by the state to pay for a procedure that violates their conscience — especially one performed on a minor.
