Los Angeles City Hall Travesty

Official Statement by Johnnie Morgan, President of The California Republican Assembly

STATEWIDE — The recent revelations regarding three Los Angeles City Council members – Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and Kevin de Leon – are disheartening and embarrassing. As a native of Los Angeles and a lifelong resident, I am shocked at the deplorable behavior of these public servants.

As an African American, I am appalled at the deceit perpetrated by these so-called city leaders. They deliberately, and with malice, attempted to disenfranchise African American voters by strategically drawing district lines that would significantly undermine the voting power of African American in this city. This is an outrage. These council members swore to serve all constituents to the best of their ability, not a few select groups.

The language used to describe her colleagues’ young African American son and the actions Martinz said she would take toward him are totally unacceptable and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

As the President of the California Republican Assembly (CRA), and the first African American to hold this office, I am calling on the California Democratic Party to denounce Los Angeles City Councilmen Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo and demand their immediate resignations. If Republican officeholders were in this situation, you would have already insisted they resign. The California Democratic Party needs to act decisively and demonstrate to the city that they do not condone this type of deplorable behavior. Not speaking out is proof that this is how Democrats operate and their attitude is “citizens wellbeing be damned.”
