Senator Scott Wiener has proposed a new bill, Senate Bill 222, to hold the fossil fuel industry responsible for natural disasters in California. The bill would allow insurance companies and victims of fires, floods, rain, sleet, wind events, mudslides, and earthquakes to sue fossil fuel companies for damages.
The bill includes a clause that holds companies accountable for providing “misinformation or disinformation about the connection between its fossil fuel products and climate change and extreme weather or other events attributable to climate change.” However, critics argue that this clause could lead to punishment for anyone who speaks out against climate change or provides misinformation, and it raises questions about who would judge what is misinformation.
