Juneteenth, now recognized as a national holiday, holds profound significance in American history as the day slavery officially ended in the United States. Signed into law by President Joe Biden on June 17, 2021, it’s celebrated widely across the nation, serving as a reminder of the progress we’ve made as a country and the work that remains. It’s important for Republicans, regardless of their political stance, to understand its historical significance and embrace the cultural traditions associated with it. Juneteenth represents a unique opportunity to unite Americans across party lines in celebration of freedom, heritage, and community.

Historical Context

Juneteenth finds its roots on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared the end of slavery, two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. This delayed proclamation in Texas underscores the challenges in abolishing slavery across different regions of the country during the Civil War era.

Juneteenth became a national holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed it into law.

Mr. Leonard passed away in 2017 and did not get the chance to see his work advocating for Juneteenth to become a National Holiday, however his legacy of the Juneteenth Picnic in the Park with Red Soda Pop, BBQ and Watermelon continues through his wife Dr. Hassena Khan Leonard, his daughters, AyEsha Leonard McLaughlin, Ariyana Leonard, son-in-law Jason McLaughlin and his granddaughters Jade and Jazmine McLaughlin.
