California Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to disband Team Blaze, a highly trained volunteer firefighting force, resulted in the California National Guard not being able to get a complete firefighting force to Los Angeles until 10 days after the L.A. fires began reducing homes to cinders.
The governor’s team argued that the firefighting unit was “inadequately trained,” despite the fact that it was funded by generous donors and met federal standards for combating wildfires. The Newsom administration has been criticized for their response to the wildfires, with some accusing them of lying about the effectiveness of the volunteer firefighting force.
